Most of the nowadays Mediterranean countries were part of the Roman Empire. France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, the Balkans, Turkey, Some of Middle East, the Maghrib and some of Southern Britain. Of course, the names of regions were different (i.e. France=Gaul). The Roman Empire heavily affected all these countries for posterity, even up to today.
