A:The ancient Assyrians practised a polytheistic religion not unlike the religion we now know the Israelites practised, but they did not interfere in the religious beliefs of the conquered peoples. The Assyrian imperial god was Ashur. They worshipped the sun god, moon god and other gods and goddesses known to the Israelites, but under Assyrian names. The major difference between the religion of Israel and that of Assyria was that Yahweh (YHWH) was unknown to the Assyrians but had become the chief God of Israel.
