PEople in ancient India did not eat meat because for them animals which were being killed for hunting and eating considered sacred and thus killing of them was forbidden why sacred becasue those animals were holy like COW is holy because it symbolizes the earth and cow symbolizes fertality so Killing of Cow is forbidden upto now but these conditions re related to different relagious groups and many other religions in ancient India didnot necessary folowed that.
