A: Some Jews were deported in 597 BCE, but the main exile took place in 586 BCE and is regarded as the beginning of the Babylonian Exile. Not all the residents of Judah were deported, but those who were deported considered those who remained behind as inferior and would not allow them to be involved in nation-building after the Return from Exile.
