Why did the Assyrians take conquered peoples from their lands and move them to other places

This was part of a concrete policy by the Assyrians (and otherMiddle Eastern peoples) to prevent rebellion. Most people had avery localized sense of identity. The current idea that you retainyour culture and beliefs when you move from place to place did notexist at that time. As a result, forcibly deporting people alsotook away their identities and their gods, making them much lesslikely to rebel.
