Aeneas can be thought of as a Trojan or a Roman. At the point of the Trojan war, Rome did not exist. Aeneas was one of the few survivors from Troy. The gods commanded him to find the spot where Rome would one day be founded. He did find it, but did not settle there. His ancestors later actually founded Rome. Technically, he was one of the last Trojans and the first Roman.

The story is of course legend entwined with myths.

There is no evidence at all to support these stories which were sung by the bards before cursive writing was invented. They were nice stories which gave some background to Roman families seeking to establish a pre-eminent place in the Roman social and power stakes.

The earlier Roman historians were quite caustic about these stories, which include Julius Caesar being descended from goddess Venus, if you believe that sort of thing.
