In public Augustus gave off the aura of simplicity and old fashioned Roman values and morals. In private he was congenial, liked his luxury, and his dice playing and in the few quotes that have come down to us from him, he seems to have been quite witty. He also had a sense of justice and a determined streak in him as evinced by his actions when he came to Rome to claim his inheritance.
