Neolithic tools are made by altering these materials by heating, cooling, soaking, knapping (striking flint nodules to knock off a thin shard), carving and decorating.

One neolithic tool in use today is a knife made of obsidian. Starting with a larger piece of obsidian, or volcanic glass, you can strike it with a hammer-stone to separate a small thin piece of the rock. It is sharper than a metal knife.
