Yes, the Romans recognized the benefit of the Phoenician record keeping and their sense of order. (Let’s not get into the alphabet, that went through changes before it morphed into the Latin alphabet). They were also skeptical, leery, suspicious and watchful in dealing with them, as Phoenicians had reputation for being sharp traders at best and downright cheaters at worst. If a Roman complained of a “Phoenician deal” it meant that he had been victimized by a underhanded trick.
