Why were the cities of Rome and Carthage enemies

They were enemies because they were rivals in trying to gain supreme authority in the area. Trade was a big factor, as Carthage was an established force and Rome was the upstart. The term trade did not exclusively mean buying and selling; it also meant the possession of territories and their resources. When Rome tried to move in on Carthaginian territory, wars ensued.
