The pont du Gard is a bridge of a Roman aqueduct in southernFrance. It was part of an a 50 km-long aqueduct which supplied theRoman town of Nemausus (Nimes). It was the highest aqueduct bridgein the empire. To reach a height of 48.8 m (160 ft), the Romansbuilt three tiers of arches.The first tier had 6 arches 22 m (72ft.) high, it piers were 6 m (20 ft.) thick and it length was 142 m(466 ft.) The second tier has 11 arches 20 m (66 ft.) high, thepiers were 4 m (13 ft.) thick and it was 242 m (794 ft.) long. Thetop tier had 47 arches (only 35 remain) 7 m (23 ft.) high, itspiers were 3 m (9.8 ft.) thick and it was 275 m (902 ft.) long.
