The job or the responsibilities of a centurion depended upon his rank. There were eleven ranks of centurion and each position had different responsibilities and pay. The term “centurion” was a blanket term for “officer”. The lowest ranking centurion was in charge of a century of 80 men (not 100 men) and you could perhaps liken him to a present day sergeant. There were centurions in charge of the entire cohort, others in charge of the camp. The camp prefect, a centurion, was not only in charge of the camp but also was the third in charge of the legion.
