Lucius Cornelius Sulla was an impoverished patrician who learned his military skills under Gaius Marius. (they later became enemies) He led the armies that conquered Greece and was the first Roman general to march his troops on Rome itself. He became dictator, initiated proscriptions, tried to reform the government. He was a heavy drinker. He was conscientious and meticulous in carrying out his religious duties.
