Purple clothing was rare so it was a sing of importance for the wearer. The source was the Syrian shells at Ugarit. It is an expensive process to make purple garbs, therefore only allowing high-ranking persons to purchase them because only they can afford them. Then came other persons who could wear them but those were not sold to them because they didn’t have the rank. Some slaves commented statements like; if everyone had it, it would be worthless.
