As the mainland cities of Eretria andAthens had aided the rebels, Persia mounted a punitive expeditionagainst them, but were turned back at Marathon. They then decidedto bring all the Greek city-states under their control and mountedan invasion (which failed). The war dragged on for 50 years untilthe Persians gave up and left the cities to resume their fightingeach other.
