Well, first let’s go back and learn some history about Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia is the Greek word that means “the land between two rivers”, and that was the area called Sumer which was between the Tigris River and the Euphrates River. First, the Sumerians lived in northern Mesopotamia, which had very good conditions. But, with the overpopulation, people started moving south. But other problems occurred that led to others. And each solution created another problem. So, people started working together and that made bigger city-states. Soon enough though, people started attacking neighboring communities and those started building big walls around their city-state. The question now arising is “Was Ancient Sumer a Civilization?” There are seven requirements for a city to be a civilization. The first one was stable food supply. Now that people didn’t have to move from place to place and hunt and gather, people can stay in one place and farm. Another requirement is social structure. Social structure is the way a civilization is organized. Each person has a status, or importance. There needs to be a king, a queen, soldiers, farmers, and slaves. There are more ranks, but I am not going to list all of them. The third requirement is government. If Sumer was to be a civilization, then it needed government. The government would be controlled by the king, and he would give away food, control position, and have many other jobs. Another requirement is religion. They need religion, and gods, gods to worship and temples to make. A ziggurat is an ancient Mesopotamian temple tower. Another requirement would be some type of writing. The writing they used was called cuneiform, writing that uses wedge-shaped characters. A scribe is a person who writes. Technology is the sixth requirement. Technology is the use of tools and other inventions for practical purposes. Lastly, the arts. Technology and the arts bring us to your question. Well, one of their major inventions was the plow. They used to have to poke a hole in the dirt, put a seed in, and then cover the hole back up with dirt. But after the invention of the plow, someone could just keep walking with the plow and put a seed in and then someone could come from behind and cover up the hole. It made their life much easier. And to this day, people in modern-day Iraq (that is Mesopotamia) still use plows and animals to pull them. Also, another major invention was the wheel. They could move from place to place easier. In addition, they invented the chariot. A chariot is a two-wheeled vehicle pulled by a horse. The lyre was a musical instrument that was used to entertain the queen. Ancient Mesopotamia invented many things, and irrigation systems which helps us a lot in this time period.
