Their success was based on:

1. Declining battle against the combined Persian cavalry.

2. When the cavalry was being embarked they fell on the inferior Persian infantry which they were able to defeat without their cavalry support.

3. Realising the cavalry was being shipped around to Athens to capture the city in their absence, the Athenian infantry ran back the 26 miles to the city and were in time to stop the cavalry when it arrived.
