The Persian Wars were the first known international conflictfought by European states. The immediate result was to give theGreek cities, particularly the Delian League led by Athens,hegemony over the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, and theapproaches to the Pontic Sea (Black Sea) for a hundred years, untilfirst Macedonia and then Rome conquered the Greek world.(It made it much easier for Alexander the Great to conquerPersia, decades after the Persian Wars.)
