Edit: The first Punic war was caused by Rome and Carthage both being requested to aid Messana after being attacked by the tyrant Hiero of Syracuse. Carthage already had a footing in Sicily and aimed to use the battle to gain control of Sicily and the straits. By choosing to intervene in Sicily, Rome was bringing themselves against Carthage, not Syracuse. The leader of Carthage at the time was Hamilcar Barca; Hannibal led the second.
