In 218 BC Hannibal invaded Italy, but did not attack Rome because the lost his siege machine while crossing the Alps in the snowy winter. Without these he could not attack a city the size of Rome. After Routing the Romans and their allies three times, his campaign lingered in southern Italy and then came to a dead end.
