When Assyria finally destroyed Israel in 722 BCE, they deported many of the population to other parts of their empire, where the former Israelites gradually assimilated the local culture and religion, and lost their separate identity. It is said that their are small communities in areas such as northern Iraq where the people’s names are suggestive of a Hebrew heritage, but nothing is certain.

Others fled south into neighbouring Judah, and their descendants began to identify as Jews. Still others fled all the way to Egypt for sanctuary.

The Assyrians repopulated the former kingdom of Israel, now known as Samaria, with people from other parts of the empire. Along with those Israelites still remaining in rural areas, they became the Samarians.
