The Athenians did not win the Persian Wars. The southern mainland Greek city-states in alliance defeated the Persian invasion of 480-479 BCE in three battles – Salamis 480 BCE, Plataia and Mykale 479 BCE.

The Delian League then defeated the Persians at Eurymedon 466 BCE and Cyprus 450 BCE.

They achieved these victories by good stratedy and tactics, fighting the Persians on ground/sea locations which optimised their superiority in naval tactics and their advantage of armoured infantry by fighting on ground which neutralised the superior Persian cavalry.
