After destroying the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae and burning Athens which had been abandoned rather than defended, the Persian Empire seemed unbeatable. At Salamis the Persian Navy was soundly defeated, and the went home. Xerxes also went home, leaving the Persian Army in Greece. They were defeated in the next year at the Battle of Plataea, and then they too went home. The Persians continued to meddle in Greek affairs afterward, and they sided with Sparta against Athens in the Peloponnesian War, but they never again attempted an invasion of Greece after their defeat at Salamis.
