Ethnically, the Samaritans are believed to have been a mixture of various, mainly Semitic races, including the remnants of the Israelites who were not deported by the Assyrians in 722 BCE or fled into exile at that time.

Since the Assyrians were the conquering power, they were unlikely to have sent their own poeple into the former kingdom of Israel, but they did send a great many Arabs. The Samaritans were a mixture of all these races, including Israelites, but not Jews, who continued to live safely in the kingdom of Judah until the Babylonian conquest. Most Samaritans eventually became Jews.
