oAl Gore “Inconvenient Truth” In An Inconvenient Truth, Albert Gore presents us with a thought-provoking speech by employing three persuasive appeals. He make use of the elements of ethos, logos, and pathos in order to better achieve the goal of notifying the severity of global warming as well as awakening people’s environmental consciousness. As a reminder from our text book Pathos is an emotional appeal. Ethos is an ethical appeal. Logos is a logical appeal. An example of pathos is simply someone appealing to you through emotions (sadness, happiness, etc. ). Ethos is basically showing your character or qualification on whatever.

During the last two decades Al Gore had shown his tendency to be more sophist than Gadfly even if his comparing himself to one of the most credited and privileged philosopher of our Era. In the movie Albert Gore appeals to logos by piling up deliberate evidence to further convince people about the crisis of global warming. He illustrates his point with dynamic graphs and charts, one of which indicates the rapid change in temperature associating with the escalation of carbon dioxide, are displayed with movement owning to the multi-media. Secondly, Gore targets the audience’s emotions several times in appeal of pathos.

According to Plato, Socrates “likens himself to a GADFLY (a horsefly). Just as a gadfly constantly agitates a horse, preventing it from becoming sluggish and going to sleep so too Socrates, by (moving through the City) stirring up conversations in the marketplace, prevents the City from becoming sluggish, careless and intolerant (thinking it knows something when it doesn’t). ” He might be the first to compare himself to Socrates. I would point out that although he was not a gadfly, he always took pains to attack and examine others arguments themselves, he was never content to say “your argument is invalid because you are human. That’s basically all that Al Gore has, he steadfastly refuse to attack the polls/arguments makes or presents on his own terms. His content is just to call the source into question. He dressed up the ad hominem in flowery terms. Al Gore is a sophist not only because of his skill in rhetoric; but in the modern sense he offer erroneous arguments and dressed them up as logic through the use of words. To resume, by analyzing Al Gore’s well-organized steps to proving his main idea, we can etermine that Al Gore has skillfully exploited the three above-discussed appeals, ethos, logos, and pathos when divulging his viewpoints on global warming to people. The question that we should ask, is everything Gore say a bit of a stretch? I’m not saying that what he is saying about global warming isn’t true, but I feel he does use a bit of propaganda to make viewers agree with him. Propaganda is a way of communicating that helps make people think a certain way or maybe to agree with your statements. On the other hands, I do believe if anyone wants to help make a difference in the way we treat our environment, this movie is a must-se.
