Abstract

             Sexual harassment is one of the common cases filed today. This paper aims to discuss the important things that an individual would ought to know about the topic. Many human rights have been violated because of the unawareness of the appropriate things to do. How would one know that he or she is already being sexually harassed?

             Different circumstances wherein sexual harassment may happen shall be further discussed in the succeeding section. Though it is not confined only with the given circumstances. The Supreme Court Case No. 84-1979 under Justice Rehnquist including the respondent Mechelle Vinson and the harasser Sydney Taylor shall also be analyzed based on the given facts. The Law on Sexual harassment shall be associated with the case.

            “Sexual Harassment is a form of sex discrimination” (Sexual Harassment, par.1) brought about by the violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Such violation can serve as the grounds for Federal Law against work place discrimination.

            The case that is to be studied is Supreme Court Case No.84-1979 under Justice Rehnquist. The respondent was Mechelle Vinson while the accused is Sydney Taylor of the Meritor Savings Bank. Mechelle Vinson had met Sidney Taylor in the year 1974. When Vinson acquired for a job, she was immediately accommodated. Her position was gradually promoted. After some time, when Vinson was to take a sick leave, for an indefinite time, she was then discharged for excessive use of the said leave. This was further brought to trial. During the trial, it was brought out that Vinson, during her four years stay at the Meritor Savings Bank, she has experienced sexual harassment. Not just once, but repeated times. It was penetrated for the fear of losing her job if she refuse to her supervisor. The accused would definitely deny this accusation. However, it was summed after an appeal that a claim of hostile environment sex discrimination has violated the Title VII (U.S. Supreme Court case, par.1, 47).

            The following is the statistics as of received sexual harassment complaints for the Fiscal year 2007: According to the statistics, there are a total of 12,510 cases of sexual harassments as of 2007, 20001.6 are filed by males while 10,508.4 are filed by females.
