The causes of procrastination can be listed as perfectionism and being better off under pressure; the effects of it, as stress and the sense of guilt. The first cause of procrastination is being a perfectionist. If one is diligent and meticulous, being a perfectionist can not be realistic. In the first stage of the situation, the person always feels the need of doing more research. The most suitable time for completing the task never comes, because it feels like the task is not good enough and needs to be revised over and over again.

In the second type, the person does not believe in him/herself and thinks that the task’s being perfect is out of question. Hence, s/he puts off the work until the last minute with a low self-esteem. The second cause of procrastination is being more productive under pressure. It is believed to be related to the character of a person. The brain secretes different chemicals when it is under pressure and some people can turn this into an advantage and do their work in last minute to be more productive and fast.

It can be seen clearly in the example of a boy playing the piano very well in front of the audience after several faulty practices at home. As there are some causes of procrastination, there are some effects of it accordingly. The most common effects are said to be stress and the sense of guilt. The first effect of it is stress. It is a serious health and psychological problem which occurs under pressure and being a procrastinator triggers the process. If the required task is undone, it means the nightmare of ‘due date’ is at the back door.

One can not help feel the stress when s/he have not finished the duty but should have. It may lead unsolvable problems such as serious heart diseases. The second effect of procrastination is the sense of guilt. In spite of finished right away, the work is put off till the last minute and of course the situation is not comforting at all. The sense of guilt might even be hurtful because the passed time can not be lived again, that means there is nothing can be done for the wasted times.

Being one of the most common effect of procrastination, the sense of guilt, should be considered well, otherwise it will most probably poke us psychologically until we are finished with the task. All in all, procrastination is a serious case as it can be understood looking above to the effects. To eliminate stress and not to feel guilty about our undone duties, we should at least try to do our best not to put off our actions. As Mark Twain stated, “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. ” This is the easiest way to accomplish not to be a procrastinator anymore!
