Jeremy’s popularity has not only influenced fans and other advocates but his story has also a major issue in the political race. Jeremy Lin’s story is one that is very captivating and intriguing and it has an effect on the entire world. Jeremy Shu-How Lin, who was actually born in Los Angeles, California, was born on August 23, 1988 to parents Gie-Ming and Shirley. Lin’s parents, who have a multiple citizenship in both Taiwan and the United States, emigrated from Taiwan to the United States in the mid-1970s hoping for a better life for themselves.

Lin’s parent both were five feet six inches but his maternal grandmother’s family was very tall, and her father was over six feet, I’m assuming that’s where he got his height from. Lin has an older brother named Josh and a younger brother named Joseph, all were taught how to play basketball by their father, Gie-Ming, at the local YMCA (Wikipedia). Jeremy attended Palo Alto High School; Jeremy made goods grades and was also the captain of the basketball team back in 2005. With all of the talent on the team, Jeremy stood out leading his team to a 32-1 record beating Mater Dei in the state title game.

Even though Lin was a great basketball player in high school, he had a difficult time getting into college. Harvard and Brown were the only schools assuring Jeremy that he would play, but unfortunately since they were Ivy League schools they could not offer him a scholarship. Jeremy ended up going to Harvard having a great four year career. In the NBA, Jeremy spent his rookie year sitting on the bench. He’s recently playing with the New York Knicks and he has made a huge impact on their season. Jeremy Lin’s of the Taiwanese or Chinese descent and that alone makes the headlines in news because he is the first from his race to play in the NBA.

Recently, commentators have viewed Jeremy as an icon in the Asian-American community just like how Tiger Woods was in Golf, which is beginning to be very common in society today (Jeremy Lin’s ethnicity is only part of the story). Floyd Mayweather, whose is a professional boxer, believes that all of this publicity is because of his ethnicity and not because of his talent. Jeremy Lin regardless of his race and ethnicity, in most people’s eyes, should be view as an athlete that has earned that right to be called a “basketball player”.

In this year’s campaign, commentators believe that Jeremy Lin’s story symbolizes the minority vote and it looks like the Republican Party will try and take advantage of his recent fame. Jeremy Lin as said that in his childhood he’s had issues with discrimination but since he’s been playing basketball, it’s become more convenient for him in society. Republicans believe that Lin’s story will help seal the minority vote in a diversifying America without straying from conservative politics, and other important issues in the election (Mediaite. om).

Lin is also a Christian; he likes to keep it to himself without forcing his beliefs on anyone, which everyone respects ultimately making him a perfect example the Republican Party can use. He personifies upward mobility, modesty, inclusiveness, courage and patience, piety, and above all, success,” says Richard Brodsky at The Huffington Post. Jeremy Lin’s strengths and nuances would help save the Republican Party and make everyone feel good (Mediaite. com). Jeremy Lin possesses all the characteristics the Republic Party needs.

More than ever, America badly needs a political “Jeremy Lin because he’s an unbeaten winner who can run on his record, he solves the long-standing Republican shortcoming on “diversity, and everyone likes him on and off the court (The Huffington Post). Rick Santorum, the defeated former senator from Pennsylvania, was given no chance when he announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination (Shreveport times). Rejected by the Republican establishment supporting Mitt Romney, he waged a lonely and underfunded grassroots effort that ultimately gave him the edge in the Iowa caucuses (Shreveport times).

He won all three primaries in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, and now finds himself tied with frontrunner Mitt Romney, according to the latest Fox News poll (Shreveport times). Rick Santorum is now being compared with Jeremy Lin because of his willingness and determination. The primary campaign is becoming more and more interesting every week and with Rick and Jeremy’s success so far, there’s no telling what that could mean for the upcoming election. Hopefully the Republican Party can build off of these recent events to give them an edge over Barack Obama.

When it comes to the issue of Jeremy Lin, I believe that he is someone that could make a difference on and off the field. Not too many people with the same upbringing can accomplish what Jeremy has done in his young career. As far as politics are go and being that Jeremy is a minority, he’s presence will make a huge impact because he is a representation of all minorities and people like him. For someone like Jeremy, it takes a lot of ambition and hard work to make it where he’s made it. Since the minority vote usually goes on the democratic side, I believe it’s going to stay that way no matter how they decide to use Jeremy Lin’s story.

The fact that Jeremy went to Harvard does not change the fact that he’s Asian and It seems like politicians will try and say that if Jeremy Lin can do it, so can anyone else. Since republicans strive for independence, I believe Jeremy’s story will be significant to their run in the election.
