Alexander the Great made sure that the soldiers fighting for himwere driven to win battles by making sure that they weresignificantly rewarded with the spoils of their conquests. He wouldfight alongside them and off the battlefield would spend time withhis soldiers talking and listening to them and making sure thatthey felt that they were an important part of his campaign. Thisappearance of unity and camaraderie in addition to Alexanderscourage and fortitude induced familiarity and affection from hismen. The soldiers, however, also knew that Alexander could beruthless to anyone betraying him and the consequences for anyoneeven suspected of betrayal and dissent would be brutal.
