Around this time, hand axes were made with exquisite craftsmanship, and eventually gave way to smaller, more diverse toolkits, with anemphasis on flake tools rather than larger core tools. Thesetoolkits were established by at least 285,000 years in some partsof Africa, and by 250,000-200,000 years in Europe and parts ofwestern Asia. And later stone tools are the toolkits called ‘UpperPaleolithic’ in Europe and ‘Late Stone Age’ in Africa. Thesetoolkits are very diverse and reflect stronger cultural diversitythan in earlier times. The pace of innovations rose. Groups of Homosapiens experimented with diverse raw materials (bone, ivory, andantler, as well as stone), the level of craftsmanship increased, and different groups sought their own distinct cultural identityand adopted their own ways of making things.
