There is a legend that Aeneas escaped Troy during the Trojan War and eventually went to Italy. He was said to have founded the Latin city of Lavinium and his son, Ascanius, founded the Latin city of Alba Longa and its royal dynasty. Romulus and Remus were said to be the sons of Rhea Silvia, the daughter of a deposed king of Alba Longa. The story of Aeneas was told in Virgil’s poem the Aeneid in the 1st century BC. The Romans fancied themselves as being descendants of the Trojans. Connecting Romulus and Remus with the royal family of Alba Longa served to bridge a 400 year gap between the dates of Battle of Troy and the foundation of Rome
