The Phoenicians were a commercial trading people. They began in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and established business relationships with other peoples in the Mediterranean Sea area. To augment their trading they constructed cargo ships and and naval vessels to protect their commercial interests. They also constructed colonies throughout the Mediterranean Sea. One major colony was Carthage that became a leading power. This city state was located on the North African coast south of Sicily. The Phoenicians were a Semitic people.
