The Olympic Games were created by the Ancient Greeks. The firstGames are traditionally believed to have been held in 776 BC. Theywere held every four years until 393 AD, a run of almost 1200years.A movement to reestablish the Games began with Greek revoltsagainst Ottoman Turk rule in 1821. Games were actually held in1851, 1870 and 1875.In 1890 Baron Pierre de Coubertin formed the InternationalOlympic Committee (IOC) and the first Games of the Modern Olympiadwere held under its auspices in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Except forthe 1916 games, which were cancelled because of World War 1, andthe 1940 and 1944 games, which were cancelled because of World War2, the Modern Olympics have been held every four years sine1896.
The Greek city-states held the games as a celebration to the god Zeus. They were staged in 776 BCE by the Greek city-state Elea at the temple at Olympia in their territory.
The modern Olympics were created by a baron named Pierre deCoubertin who founded the International Olympic Committee in 1894.
