The Greek city-states were freed to go back to their endless warsamongst each other, with horrendous effect on the populace. Athensbenefited temporarily by converting the alliance it had led againstthe Persian Empire into an empire of its own, and lived high on thehog on the proceeds, until it lost the Peloponnesian War and wasstripped of its empire.
