The Assyrians did not have an issue with other religions per se, but their nationalistic implications. The Assyrians treated Non-Assyrians in such a way to destroy their religions because unique religions and veneration were correlated with a distinct national identity. The current idea that you retain your culture and beliefs when you move from place to place did not exist during the Assyrian period. As a result, the Assyrians forcibly deported people from their homelands in order to take away their identities and their gods, making them much less likely to rebel. The Assyrians did it to the Israelites, Arameans, Phoenicians, Hattis, Hurrians, and Urartu (who were in their conquest area).
