Why was it easier for Rome to expand following the defeat of Carthage

Carthage contested with Rome for control of the WesternMediterranean, and with the Carthaginians sold into slavery at theend of the Third Punic War, it had no real opposition. And asMacedonia had supported Carthage in the Second Punic War, Rome hada good excuse to enter into the Eastern Mediterranean to punish it.
