1 – Hannibal unloosed his 80 elephants whose attack was scattered by the Romans.
2 – The Roman cavalry attacked the Chartaginian cavalry on both wings succeeding in making them flee, then pursuing the battered enemies across the plains.
3 – The Roman legions moved against the three lines of Hannibal’s infantry, crushing the first and breaking through the second.
4 – The Roman cavalry returned from the successful pursuit and struck from the rear the third Chartaginian infantry led by Hannibal in person, while the Roman infantry regrouped to attack frontally.
5 – The combined attack overwhelmed Hannibal’s last line of resistance and the battle was over.
