The pre-Christian religion of the Assyrian empire (sometimes called Ashurism) centred around the Assur, patron god of the city of Assur, besides Ishtar patroness of the city of Niniveh. The god, Ashur, the patron god of Ashur from the Late Bronze Age was in constant rivalry with the patron deity of Marduk. In Assyria, Ashur eventually superceded Marduk in his role as husband of Ishtar.
