The Persians began to suppress a revolt initiated by theIonian-Greek city-state of Miletus. The following year the revoltspread and Eretria and Athens from mainland Greece joined in toassist them. This lead to the revolt spreading and the Persians,after putting the Ionian revolt by 493 BCE, turning to mainlandGreece to install local tyrants who would keep the Greek citiesquiet and not disrupt peace in the Persian Empire.
