All of this took place in what we call prehistory. This means that no records were kept, no writing system had evolved and nobody else was around to take notes. Only the things that survive in the archaeological record are known about those times – items of bone, shell, antler, stone and similar materials. Nothing connected with language can ever be known about those prehistoric times, unless you can invent a time machine to take you back with a pen and paper to record spoken words.

It is very likely that many different languages evolved in different places and at different times, giving rise eventually to the huge number of languages in the world today.
