Athens ratted on the 180cities of the Dorian League which it hadled against the Persians. Athens continued to collect by force thecontributions they collected to finance the war against Persia andused the money for its own benefit, building the Parthenon, puttinghalf its own citizens on the public payroll, and paying for thefleet which extorted the money. They also built walls from thewalled city down to the walled port, which enabled them towithstand a siege by importing food, and sending out their fleetfrom the post to harass the home cities of any adversary.
