According to one tradition he was origanally named Aristocles but was called Plato (from the Greek platus – ‘wide’) because of his wide shoulders.
When he was about 40 Dionysus I (tyrant of Syracuse) had him sold into slavery. He was recognized and ransomed and sent back to Athens.
In 388 B.C. he founded his school the Academy, which is sometimes called the first European university.
Aristotle was one of his pupils at the Academy.
Plato is recognized as one of the finest writers in Greek literature.
