Initially born out of Persian suppression of revolts by Greekcity-states within its empire, it widened to the Persian Empireversus a coalition of southern Greek cities led by Sparta whichresisted this intrusion. After defeat of a Persian invasion, Athensformed a coalition of front-line city-states (Delian League) whichcontinued to resist Persian attempts at enforcing peace, untilPersia gave up and left them to go back to their usual disruptiveinternal fighting.
