He was not, however a lawyer – there was no such trade in the Greekworld at that time: people had to represent themselves in court. Hewas a professional speech-writer for others, and used this skill tostart making speeches of his own, becoming influential in theAthenian peoples’ assembly, where he took up the cause of badmouthing Philip II of Macedon who was expanding his influence overthe Greek world.
**The orators of ancient Athens, could not publicly representpeople or charge a fee to publicly represent people but they didwrite the legal speeches a person needed to represent himself. Theywere called logographers and considered the equivalent of today’slawyers to the ancient Athenians.
