The Assyrians became Syriacs, Chaldo-Assyrians, Nestorians andChaldeans. They are a distinct ethnic group whose origins lie innorthern Mesopotamia, what was Assyria. They speak, read, and writedistinct dialects of Eastern Aramaic exclusive to northernMesopotamia and its immediate surroundings. Over the centuries, anumber of Assyrians also converted to Islam and became part of theSunni Muslim Arab communities in Iraq and Syria.
