Men were often taken captive in wars with Rome and some of them ended up as gladiators in the Colosseum. They could “earn” their freedom by staying alive and fighting well for their masters. These men were often sold/traded and were often dead before they could win freedom. The business of training and owning gladiators was a big one for the rich of Rome.
