The Colosseum in Rome is an arena and theretofore it is differentfrom modern stadium. It was an arena for the gladiatorial games.The arena itself was 83 meters by 48 meters (272 by 157 feet). Ithad a wooden floor which covered the hypogeum,an elaborate two-level underground network of tunnels and cageswhere the gladiators and the animals stayed before the contests.Access to the arena for the caged animals and for props was througheighty vertical shafts. There were larger hinged platforms, whichwere for lifting called elephants.
