The Greek historian and traveller Herodotus writing c.450BC was told it took 100,000 men 20 years to build. More modern estimates put the number between 20,000 and 30,000. Most scholars today agree that the workers were not slaves but peasant farmers who worked on the pyramid for three months each year when the annual flood of the Nile made work in the fields impossible.
