The Sumerians and Akkadians ruled Mesopotamia from the beginning ofhuman recorded history. After the Fall of Babylon in 539 BC, andits conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, it continued underthe Parthian Empire and was a contested region from around 200 ADto 700 AD.
Eventually it was part of several Islamic caliphates, then theOttoman Empire, then Iraq (1920).
