In 490 BCE a punitive expedition was sent by Persia against Athens and Eretria for interfering in Persian Asia Minor. Eretria was captured and the population enslaved. The Athenians, with their allies the Plataians, met the Persians on the plain of Marathon north of Athens and defeated the Persian infantry.

In this battle they won because the Persian cavalry was absent – shipped to the port of Athens to gallop up and enter the city when traitors opened the gates for them. Warned of this, the Athenian army ran the 26 miles over the hills to get there just in time to save the city. The first marathon run – and carrying armour and weapons. Modern marathon runners get it easy.
